Abaco
The two main islands, Great Abaco and Little Abaco are flanked on the east by a string of small cays that stretch more than 130 miles. Some of the more familiar names are Elbow Cay (Hopetown), Great Guana Cay, Lubbers Quarters, and Green Turtle Cay (New Plymouth). The calm waters between the cays and Abaco are popular with boaters. This area is known as the sailing capital of the Bahamas with boats still being manufactured on Man-O-Way Cay. Like other islands in the Bahamas, the Abacos were settled by Loyalists who tried to farm as they had in America, but soon turned to the sea to sustain themselves.
Access is via Marsh Harbour Airport (MHH) for the southern Abacos and Treasure Cay Airport (TCB) for the more northern cays. On the main islands, cars and golf carts can be rented as well as boats. On the smaller cays, the primary transportation is via boat, golf cart, bicycles or walking.
